Body found in the River Irwell with major police scene in place  Manchester Evening News

Emergency services are responding after a body was found in the River Irwell this morning.

GMP and other emergency agencies were called to the border of Castlefield and Salford this morning.

A footbridge has been taped off, with a cordon in place close to the banks of the River Irwell. There is also a large emergency service presence at Kelso Bridge near St George's Island on the outskirts of the city centre. Firefighters are among the emergency service personnel who have been seen walking across the bridge

Police, fire crews and paramedics are at the scene. Pictures show emergency vehicles stationed on both sides of an underpass, which runs below the train and tram tracks and links Woden Street with Kelso Place.

A GMP spokesman said: "At 8.07am this morning, police were called with a report of a concern for the welfare of a person in the water in the River Irwell close to St Georges island. "Emergency services attended, and sadly a body was found. Enquiries are ongoing but the circumstances surrounding the persons death is not being treated as suspicious." Officers are stationed at the cordon.
